This is likely to cost you far more than the 4K in bad publicity; especially if this guy goes to the media.

Even if he doesn't go to the media, you know he's telling everyone he knows. And with the great deal he got(almost got) he would very likely have been a repeat customer and would have been telling everyone he knew what a good deal he got, so you have no idea how much business you probably lost as a result of this.

That is the exact point I was getting at
and why the deal was honored

First statement:
"I also don't want a guy that was interested in my product to go away angry and buy from the competiton, or even worse than that, write a letter or something to the paper telling how my guys screwed him."

Second statement:
"I got the guy to bring the car back and return it, he was not happy, gave us the "never gonna buy from here again," tyrade, and he went on his way. the salesman has been dealt with and that's that."

How do you spell inconsistent?

And we wonder why us New Car Dealers get bad raps for the public. Perhaps we deserve them sometimes??????

the deal was verbal, there was nothing in writing. inconsistent? i suppose, but taking the 4G hit was more than i wanted to do right now, and a crappy way to kick off the year.

I feel better about your decision since there was nothing in writing, from your original post, I think we all assumed the customer had been contracted.

So of course that brings up the question of why was the customer in the vehicle for two days with nothing in writing.

Hmmm....think I would have charged it off to advertising, because, ultimately, it's what you're going to get. I know what impact 'word of mouth' had on my end of the business and I was only selling parts of the car. Oh well, it must be different building a multi-million dollar parts business as opposed to selling cars........

Out here in CA there is no "verbal" deals, there is always a contract of some sort. Sometimes we will roll a car when the customer wants to find his own financing but only with an "either-or" contract. Marty, what if your customer skipped? Maybe not a problem in GA but in CA these things can head south if you know what I mean.

And if we ever wrote a contract at a $4G looser, we'd have to eat it. Obviously, the rules are different outside my state.

How can you let a customer go with just a verbal deal? I don't see many dealers letting customers take a car for a couple of days without signing something.
