ASE Parts Professional Certification

Postby Gary J. Naples » Sun Jan 23, 2000 1:21 pm

One of the fastest growing segments of ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) is parts professional recognition.

I'm trying to ascertain the level of dealership parts personnel participation in this certification program.

I would appreciate a yes or no answer to the following questions as they apply to you.

1. Are you or any of the parts personnel in your dealership ASE Certified Parts Professionals?

2. If your answer to the first question was "no"; are you and your staff aware that there is an ASE parts certification test?

My countermen are ASE certified, however I am not a strong believer in it, really too basic to be important.

Hi Gary:

I do ask my counterpeople to obtain ASE Certification fo the professional recognition. Whether we believe in the ASE program or not they have done a fantastic job of selling the public on their importance. Presently I have 2 of 3 counterpeople certified and I also have my certification.

ASE Parts Professional Certification

I am ASE Certified myself. I do not require it of my employees. I found the test was not really suited to the job I (or they) perform. It would be more suited to a pep-boys type counterperson. It also had too many vehicle specific questions such as pins on a Chrysler ballast resistor. If you are not a Chrysler guy, you cant be 100% sure.

It has been a while since my test. They may have changed the questions.

Regardless, the plaque on the wall looks professional to most customers, and help promote an image.

We are not ASE certified. I'd be interested only because of the perceived value for customers.

I have one counterman ASE certified. It is
more perceived professionalism since the test
is more suited to NAPA or Carquest stores and
not for dealer parts personnel. I feel two
different tests should be available.
