asst managers should be able to do everything when you are not there.
i trained 4 asst that are now parts managers in the last ten years before i retired 5 yrs ago.
find out who wants to be a a full manager and train him or her. i never worried about my job.
i taught them everything they needed to know but not everthing that i knew.

Assistant should be back up responsible for everything a the manager does other than..... policy and program changes, hiring, promotions, pay changes, reprimands, firing, price level changes, vender changes etc. That said a good assistant would be relied on to give input, opinions and suggestions for all those.

I have three busy franchises, two of that are verge of ridiculously time consuming. One back counter person per line and one wholesale/retail counter person. No assistant, no clerical clerk and no shipping/receiving clerk. One counter person backs me up on placing orders and receiving when I am not there. Rarely more than one day in a row. An assistant would be nice.
