It's pretty sad when we can land people on the Moon 44 years ago - land vehicles on Mars - and send space exploration vehicles out of the solar system.... but we cannot come up with 1 common oil to use.

FYI- from http://WWW.GMdexos.com with regard to 5w20 dexos:

Greg, I just received the detailed information so including it here, so that you can look up the actual service bulletin from June. We do expect another Service Bulletin to come out from Powertrain Engineering shortly, so you can watch for that.

Direction from Powertrain Engineering is that dexos1® 0W20 is suitable for Service fill where dexos1® 5W20 was used. This will allow our Dealers to inventory one less Oil Viscosity.

This is from a Service bulletin released on June 27, 2013

Document ID: 3471215

#13-00-90-001: Information for Engine Oils Used in 2014 Model Year Vehicles - (Jun 27, 2013):

Question: Can Service Agents stop using/selling other oil weights in lieu of dexos1™

0W20 oil?

Answer: That’s an individual decision that GM Service Agents will need to make based on

the vehicles they are servicing. GM Powertrain has approved the use of 0W20 oil for

applications specifying 5W20 oil.

Again, please let us know if you have further questions.

Mike K.

Subject: 0W-20 dexos(R) to replace 5W-20

Greg,

I ended up talking with Chris Crosby @ CCA on your question.

He is going to send me the actual service announcement where they talked about 0W-20 replacing the 5W-20 (it was an announcement in June timeframe about the 2014 trucks), but you are definitely ok to move to the 0W-20. Chris actually mentioned that the supply chain of 5W-20 is running low.

It doesn’t sound like a technical bulletin has been issued, and Chris couldn’t tell us when something might appear in print.

I will forward that information on when I receive it, but please let me know if you have further questions.

Best regards,

Mike

Sorry to bring up this old post but does anybody have any documentation saying that Dexos 5W20 has been replaced by Dexos 0W20? We had a customer come in last night and wanted something in writing. Nothing in Global Connect messages or in SI.

Thanks
