Floor mat liability question

Floor mat liability question

Postby Zep33 » Mon Jan 19, 2015 9:05 pm

Customer buys a base model Sierra that just has vinyl covering the whole floor. He wants real mats. There are no real mats available for his VIN as it just has the vinyl floor covering.

The liability question - Knowing this, would you sell him mats from a different truck. Also knowing there's no way to anchor them to keep them from sliding all over the place.

My answer - no. With all the problems Toyota had and the media reports. I don't want the responsibilty/liability in case something happens somewhere down the road.

There's nothing stopping him from going to Auto Zone or Walmart to get some generic mats he can put in himself and put all the liability on himself

Any other thoughts?

Unfortunatly that is what we are telling our customers. Recall 14310 tells you to buy them back on 2014s!! :o

If the customer comes in and asks for the mats with the part number he looked up online, how would you know it was for a vinyl floor? Although if I was a service manager I would not install them.

That's true but we generally try to get the VIN anyway just to verify the parts are correct for the vehicle.

In this case, it was a salesman trying to throw the mats in on the deal because the customer wanted some. I think they ended up just giving him some money to get some aftermarket ones or something. I do hope they explained it properly to the customer and advised against it but that's out of my control.
