chuck,
ref "$ to parts people ratio" rom jim 9/30
atd (american trucks dealers) suggests it's guide is $31,500 to $42,000 in 1999.
this is the first i've heard of NOT including the parts manager in the calculation. atd doesn't describe it this way. i've never heard to NOT include the parts manager in the total department figures. what is the reasoning behind this?

You might have in incorrect from ATD. The parts manager and all the 'warm' bodies working in and for the parts department are included in the formula. Perhaps someone is reflecting the opinion of a 20 group director. The numbers are right for single line type 7 and 8 dealerships. They vary with multiple line operations and with a high concentration of wholesale. The permutation of this measurement are as plentiful as rats in a rice field, so proceed with a little caution. The 'mixture' of sales by type have a lot to do with the desired number. Inflation also can (but has not lately) caused a slight increase in the figures on an annual basis. For parts departments with less than 4 (1,2 or 3 people), there is NO relable guide. I did a six year study on hundreds of the 'smaller' parts departments and came to the conclusion that the minimal staffing requirements limit the ability of clear sales/per/employee goals.
