Snapon Catalog

Snapon Catalog

Postby nbeckhart23 » Thu Aug 17, 2017 3:31 pm

Just curious to see what the pros and cons are to the Snapon online catalog versus the one with the server. We have a Snapon server and 10 licenses but are looking into just using the online version and getting rid of the server any comments would be greatly appreciated thank you in advance.

I believe you need a license to use the online catalog.

You still have to license each seat. The online version can be slow, esp. if your internet is already taxed.

The online version is faster than the server.
However, you can't store user notes in the online version.
Also, if your internet craps out your are screwed.

I always use the online version, it is way faster than the in house catalog. We have the catalog on 2 computers and you would think it would be faster but it is not. These pc's are leased from snap-on.

One of the best decisions was switching to MicroCat several years ago. More features, less expensive, fewer errors, and less hassles. Even with the no-charge for a year offers to return I won't consider it.

SnapOn FYI; you can self-host but one drawback is updates and corrections only happen when you receive a new disc. Server based is much faster with less down time so if you are having speed issues you need to have your system checked.

For GM, the online version is WAY faster if you have a decent connection. I can't even use the local version anymore.

Just signed new contract with SnapOn today and we decided to go with (again) in new SSD server from Snap On, however we did not buy there micro pc's or any new pc hardware from them. We have 8 pcs that use the snap on catalog with 2 franchises (Gm & Nissan) and it was going to be way faster than trying to use GM thru Global connect (which you still have to buy the licenses).

We will build our own hardware in house to match SnapOn requirements cheaper than they can and will utilize our own IT dept. for any support needs for this hardware.

There's no charge for the server right? Included with the new contract/subscription
