DSI INVENTORY

Postby nbeckhart23 » Wed Aug 15, 2018 4:05 pm

Hello all we are getting ready to do a physical inventory and our GM wants us to use the company DSI. We have always done inventory ourselves. The 2 questions I have for now is has anyone used them before and your thoughts. Also how do you have your special order parts bin set up we have bins set up with the advisors number and the part is in our inventory but in the computer it comes up with no bin location. Just wondering how everyone else is doing it. Thanks again for the help.

We use them every year and they seem to do a good job, it's all in preparation. They also have enough people that it gets done in a reasonable amount of time and it's not to expensive.

Our SOP's are set up by 1 bin location and then the first letter of their last name. It works for us.

I use the bin SOR for all special orders. They are on shelves in the same area by first letter of last name of customer. Any inventory company can figure that out.

You definitely don't want to have no bin in the computer though. No bin parts are a no-no

with CDK, you can set a default bin to whatever you want when a new part is added. It won't automatically change existing parts that have already been added to the system with no bin though.

I'd recommend doing a batch change of all your no bin part numbers to a real location before inventory whether you have them on hand now or not

I put all of my special orders in their own source so when I do my daily stock checks I know what was sold and remove them from that source.
It is also easier to see what is in there when I need to get a dollar value and MNS report.
For their Bin Locations they are all SP-(First letter of the last name); our special order bins are all labeled with letters A-Z and that is where the part will be when we check it in our system.
I hope this helps. Good luck!

DSI does a nice job.

If your SOPs are set up under an advisor number, is that your bin location? Ours are in their own bin location, assigned by Reynolds/ERA: SP-ORD.

DSI is a professional company that does a terrific job and gives you great reports. Regarding your special orders, as with all parts, to be properly counted all parts need a unique bin location that is visible on the bin and in your DMS. If you do not bin locate your special orders it is most likely they will be hand written which is time-consuming and add to the cost of your inventory.

Also be careful on any prepaid special orders you have and how you handle them depends on your special order process and DMS system.

They will send you a pre inventory checklist. All the AutoNation stores use them.

How do any of you assign a bin location for incoming special order parts?
