I'm under them impression, if you request the codes for any reason, you need proof that the person is the actual owner of the vehicle. Even if they bring a key with them! CYA my friends

They could be out on a test drive from the local used car dealership. Those keys they bring in with them may not even belong to them. Anytime I have to access key codes we get the owners information. Also never use insurance cards. Anyone can put insurance on a car they don't own.

We pretty much go by what is in the P&P manual that was posted earlier and has worked for us in the past.

On a somewhat related note, what are you guys and gals charging for key code retrieval and/or cutting?

I was told that this is covered by some sort of law. Does anyone know if this is true or BS?

I would advise against providing a keycode for a Locksmith. All Valid Locksmiths have the means to obtain a keycode thru their Associated Locksmiths of America Membership. Besides being an iffy paper trail of legal paperwork you are not necessarily trained to understand and comprehend (I am not a lawyer either), It would leave ill will if the vehicle owner found out where the key code came from. It would also leave you (personally and company) open to lawsuits if the vehicle owner thought that the apprehension of their vehicle was unlawful etc..

I would bet anything I own that my locksmith has the owners permission and was called by that owner or he would not touch it with a 40 ft pole. I trust him more than I do some of these potheads with a registration card ,and or title and drivers license. Really would not bother me too much not to have to argue with some of these people that come in and get upset because I tell them I need this info to legally get the key codes.

I was thinking repo when I wrote that.. not locksmith. brainfade. Locksmiths still do have the means to obtain keycodes.
