I have been a GM counterman for about 17 years....... I have worked a a few different dealers...... Each one has been base plus commission..... Generally $1500 base and 2% or 2.5% gross to start. One dealer I left, the base went to $2000 plus 2%.

I would never work for a dealer that paid individual commission, that creates a hostile work invironment!!

If you have a lazy parts guys, you need a new one!!!!

Hi everyone, I've been at Mopar for a little over two years now, I work the back counter with one other guy who has been here 6 years, we have two wholesale guys, one who has been here 7 years, and the other 8, one administrative/wholesale guy of 18 years and our manager of almost 30 years total. We range our GP from 60K low months to 100K high months. I am the low man on the totem pole, I want to ask for a raise, because my work habits I believe are good, I have great relationships with all the people in the dealership, wholesale customers, and some of our retail guys. I am at 25K/year with no bonus, no benefits. I was thinking of asking a bump to 30-35K/year with a 1% bonus of the GP/month. What do you guys think.?

Depends on where you are at, geographically. Also depends on the Dept. net when all is said and done.
No benefits at 25K seems a little weak to me but then at my old establishment (27 years ago) even today that would be a "reasonable" living. But then you can buy a decent house there for 50K still today. A depressed area. Best bet is to have a talk with the boss', be straight up and dont make it sound "threatening". As long as they are straight up you should get and honest answer as to where you are at.
I have a freight clerk here that would love to move "up" to the counter. Definitely a higher paying position, BUT, he does not have the "agressive" attitude it takes to be a counterman. Damned good at what he does, freight, stock, warranty parts, backup delivery and paid above of his scale for the area. When he asked about moving up I was as "straight up" as I could possibly be. "Do you want to go into a sink or swim situation or do you want to be secure in your job, it's up to you. You can make the move if you want to "BUT" I will need a new freight man and if you don't cut it as a counterman there is no going back. I will let you decide. BE "straightup" is the key.
BTW, I still have a good freight man.
