KEY CODES

Here is a scenario that I have personally been involved in. Person came in wanted a key cut saying they lost their key. Only thing they had was a registration that was expired and per policy I refused to cut the key until they produced me a current one or at least the title. He threw a fit because I refused to cut him a key. Went to the Owner and wanted it cut. Owner backed me up. Come to find out the person no longer owned the car. He had sold the car and the person did not finish paying him off, was a relative or friend.

we charge $50 to access the key code + the price of the key. Actually our auditor said we should charge at least the same as a locksmith, which would be in the $75-$100 range. current registration or title along with drivers license of owner (must be present) is the only thing we will accept, and absolutely no exceptions.

They are now asking for delivery date and in service date on top of all the other stuff. If you dont put that in your not in compliance. Had an audit yesterday.

We have always required two proofs of ownership and the owner's photo ID with them present. We got audited last year and only thing got dinged on was not having a separate locking filing cabinet for the stored paperwork, our auditor also told us they have to be individually filed by VIN. Shot down the local locksmith a long time ago, if no one is aware to be NASTF locksmith certified is not only a pain in the ass (background checks and the like) but is also expensive to keep up. We became certified for a year to get keycodes and immobilizer codes for other makes and models, between paying NASTF and paying each manufacturer $25 or $35 per keycode access, cannot recommend it to anyone and understand why locksmiths call begging you for keycodes.

If you are not already doing it, in the Notes field, notate who you hand the key to (technician's name, customer's name, etc).

They have their own way of accessing GM key codes. You are only supposed to get key codes for the actually owner of the vehicle. NO ONE ELSE!!!!

I had pretty much this same issue at one time. The owner of the vehicles step daughter came in with a expired registration, she wanted a key because she lost her keys, I told her I could not cut from an expired registration and a non-matching drivers license. She blew a gasket, went to her service writer who said for me to cut the key, and I refused again, the writer blew a gasket at me because she was "a good customer". Long story short, about 2 hours later, I get a call from a locksmith asking for the key code and I told him I needed proof of ownership and he said I didn't need it, I hung up. About 4 hours later, I get a call from a man demanding to know why we cut a key for his car when he wasn't present. When I told him we did not without proof of ownership, he also got belligerent towards me. Suffice to say his step daughter had the car taken away from her and she took the car back! I got my revenge about 9 months later when the girl and her mother came in asking for a key because the keys were locked in the car at the local mall. I told her until her husband comes in we are NOT cutting a key. She had the husband call me and I told him until you show your face here with proof of ownership and your license it's not happening! They never got the key from me!
