I'm about 5 months into being Parts Manager here, been with the company for 2 years.
What I'm curious about is what duties your Parts Department is responsible for.
Here we do the following:
-Cut Keys / Put together key cylinders for shop / Do key recalls
-Maintain all special tool inventories
-Register DOT numbers
-Call company to clear oil tanks
-Keep track and send back warranty parts
As well as the "normal" part departement duties and some that I will think of when others mention them.

Cut Keys / Put together key cylinders for shop / Do key recalls - We cut keys. I think we've only sold 2-3 cylinders here at Toyota in the last year. If they ned to be coded, the techs do it
-Maintain all special tool inventories - Service does that here
-Register DOT numbers - Service does that here
-Call company to clear oil tanks Service does that here but I think it's kind of automatic schedule
-Keep track and send back warranty parts - we do that
As well as the "normal" part departement duties and some that I will think of when others mention them.

Along with the day-to-day Parts transactions, for Service and our Recon/paint (not body) shops we:
Code cylinders/ cut keys for warranty, internal and customer pay
Store and scrap/return warranty hold parts
Stock (not in 242) and order expendable supplies like nuts & bolts, air hoses, mops and brooms, drop light bubs, hacksaw blades, speedi-dri, etc.
Stock (store) forms and supplies for Service Drive like seat covers, paper floor mats, invoice forms, mirror hang tags (spotters) etc.
Stock (store) New/Used car supplies like front dealer license plates, license frames, rear decals etc.
Write ALL purchase orders for ALL Fixed Ops depts. and Maintenance, including sublets like towing and machine work for RO's, repairs to equipment etc.
Monitor and call to get the company trash compactor and recycle bins emptied
Ship out UPS anything for the store that's too big to be mailed by envelope on our stamp machine in the business office
Receiving for anything coming to the store that's not by USPS
As Parts Mgr. I will sometimes be involved in large equipment purchases cause I have the company credit card and an eBay account
Store anything (within reason) for the dealership that's too big for another manager's liking, with my approval.

This is probably most accurate to our dealership. How many employees total and how many techs are at your dealership? Are you in charge of warranty parts?

-Register DOT numbers yes

We hold but do not inventory office supplies and forms, if someone takes the last of something they better write it down or it will not get reordered.
We do not store or inventory bulk hardware and such.
We end up being everyone's warehouse no matter what I say, 'just put it in parts' is the cry of the confused, despite the lack of room.
We write PO's for parts, for sublets the advisors handle their own.

.
We too are the "catch all" for anything nobody else wants. We also order all toilet paper, paper towels etc for the whole dealership. It's pretty frustrating as I didn't mind when I was a counterman, but after being promoted and having more responsibility, it's frustrating to have to remember to inventory and order toilet paper and paper towels.

My duties are anything the owner/gym says the are and I just learned to live with it.
