CRUZE/SONIC 1.4L TURBO

CRUZE/SONIC 1.4L TURBO

Postby Denise Trimble » Fri Feb 10, 2017 6:18 pm

I have had a couple customers ask if we are replacing the 1.4L Turbo engines in Cruze & Sonic, often. We are small, and have only put an engine in once, and I believe it was related to a misuse issue, not a wear or warranty situation. I sell a lot of seals, gaskets and turbo lines for these, not to mention the valve covers and water outlets. Just wondering if this is a trend I need to brace myself for.

I wouldn't say engine replacements are very common. We're medium sized and we deal with plenty of these cars. We'e only replaced 2 engine assemblies. But turbos, intake manifolds, valve covers, water pumps and water outlet housings are definitely keeping our lights on.

Since 2013 we've sold 13 turbocharger assemblies for service repairs here. We did a good chunk of those in 2013 alone. Oil feed and return pipes plug up on those, water outlets, water pumps, thermostats, camshaft covers I've got at minimum one of each part on the shelf for those darn things. Heck, we've added a cam cover job on a Buick Encore to the list as well (same engine).

I Believe the change in engines for a given Model do not always reflect warranty issues. We warranty more 1.4 engines than the 1.8 hut they do not have the 1.8 since 2016. I think its more because they have changed the whole vehicle from a (p)car to a (b)car, which means that they changed more than the engines. The new 1.5 for 2016 gets better fuel mileage and ultimately that what is the objective.

Thank you all for the feedback. I think we are all running into the same things, so thankfully, I won't need to find a spot for another engine asm.

We just had to replace a 1.4 turbo engine because the #4 piston grenaded and took out the block/head
