Need some help...

I get a report from my parts reps stating our GSMP purchases are down 59% for the year. I ask them 'just what is a GSMP and how would I know from my inventory which part is in the group'? Get mixed messages: 'It's your fast moving parts' is one response. We have a lot of fast moving parts.

Our dept. sales YTD are up about 10% so our dreaded 'outside' purchases is filling the difference. GM wants us to buy from them, not AC-Delco.

Question: is there a specific definition to GMSP stuff or does it change. One thing, this year AC Delco is selling a/c compressors that were only available from GM.

Hello Mr. Allen,

You can identify GSMP parts through the ABCD category if you are ADP or the DETAIL field if you are Reynolds and Reynolds.

For instance, just off the top of my head with ERA, if the "DETAIL-POS3~" field (or 3rd position from left to right of the detail field) is equal to a "*" then these are GSMP lifetime warranty parts.

This way you can run a report based on these parts. I would even suggest that you run a report to capture these parts and then isolate them into their own source for easy identification.

There are other parts in the GSMP not included in the life time warranty like filters. Another way I found to id the lifetime parts was with the "W" as the first character in the description field. However, searching on the ABCD field is easier.

Interesting to note, I keep asking the question and finally got an answer that makes some sense: GMSP parts are all the parts we can buy from AC-Delco. Got the tape from our AC-Delco rep. and now have a pretty good list. Will also group in a separate source.

What is it going to take to get more dealers such as yourself taking an active part in this discussion forum?

You bring up a subject that has perplexed me since I started working with GM dealerships several years ago. Why, oh why, does GM make it so tough to identify AC-Delco parts for the GM dealer. If GM is supporting the AC-Delco model, why not identify these parts on their master tapes for dealers to easily separate them out?

If GM really thinks this is going to deter a dealer or AC-Delco distributor from doing business with each other, they have their head in the sand. It has been this way for years. It is like this "BIG" secret not to let the dealers know the AC-Delco part number population of their inventory.....

Ford makes it so easy to identify Motorcraft parts and separate them out, what it GM's problem with this? Why don't they just do what Mopar did back in 1979 and shut down the AC-Delco distribution and move it back to the dealers if it is so 'jobber' specific?

Sorry I don't have a good answer on why GM does it this way either. What I ended up doing was order the AC-delco master tape from adp, I load that, bounce it against my inventory using a proc I wrote. I end up with the ac delco part number in the "misc" field, or the word Delco then. This way right before I submit my order I run a list of the parts that are delco, go into RA and transfer those to a different order that gets faxed to my ac-delco wd. Works great. My WD knows that he gets every order for parts that are delco so in turn he gives me a real good discount structure. Last month I had $12,000 in CFI and discounts combined, (total 687), on $198,000 sales.
I had talked to ADP about why didn't they do this, before I wrote my program, never did get a straight answer from them either.
I am mainly posting this to let GM dealers know that it is possible to do.

If you are using ADP, all you have to do is, call ADP and ask someone to fax you a copy of the source breakdowns, by DEFAULT, from GM.

It will show you which sources contain which parts.

The ABCD field is the one thing that needs to be mastered, which I have a lot of work to do on, which would make it much more clearer.

This does not apply to dealers who like to get SOURCE HAPPY.

As for creating special stock orders from your AC-Delco supplier, what's the need?
Promo's?
GM already offers 3.75% discount + 6% return reserves on standard orders.
Most AC-Delco dealers can only offer, ON THE AVERAGE, a 5% discount and minimal reserves.
If you already have obsolescence under control, and your a qualifying dealer, you can opt for an 8.25% discount on standard orders, or, obsolescence high, a 9% return reserve. Whichever you like. You may somehow have it better where your at, but, without losing money,(at the WD end), I don't know how it's possible.

Our GM Rep tries to get us to purchase TRUCKLOAD Engines at a 5% discount, when we can order them individually at an 8.25% discount on a regular order.

AC-Delco suppliers get enough of our business without the extra effort.

If we are more efficient at our jobs of meeting demands, we won't need them as often.

First off, I take severe offense to the implication that I would do business with a wd for the "promos", to me that is akin to accusing me of stealing. It's loose-cannon comments like that that keep me from posting on these boards more often.
I went to my WD and told him that I did not want any return reserve, ball caps, jackets or shotguns, just the best possible price he could give. I also went to him about the 1.5% discount accounting took for paying on time and had him put that on my end, not accountings. So overall it is very worthwhile for me to go through the extra effort.
By the way, I do not have an obsolescence problem so I take the 8.25% discount on my DRO orders with GM.
As far as the role of the WD and getting enough of our business, I personally believe that within five years GM will see the error of their ways (in trying to paint the WD as "The Bad Guys"), and have us work more closely with the WD's, much the way Ford has. We all have financial constraints placed upon us, and I see no harm in viewing the WD as viable means of obtaining parts to satisfy the customer's needs.

Well i only heard one person mention the 8.25 discount it works for me, but i agree that it's not for all. My dept. generates 1800.00 per mnth CFI. If your sls vol. is high it works depending on your situation. The Wd's have helped us for years in getting those back ordered parts, or just filling an emergency situation in a timely maner. However GM is try to move us away from that i now get my GM order in before the WD even gets to my door and this just happened. Also its bin said that GM is pushing the WD to go after our customers the local garages, your friend the WD might be taking the busines right out from under you. You should all check it out!
