Being in the Detroit Metro Area it isn't hard to find people. It is very hard to find good people, even harder to find great people.

Around here we work 10-12 hour days, 5-6 days a week. No 401k match and insurance is a joke, most dealers 'contribute' about $100/wk. Vacations top at 2 weeks and there is no sick/personal days. Raise? Sell more parts. Why wouldn't people just be flocking to dealerships for all that!!!!!

My son works for a national retailer and has much better benefits then I do after 3 years there. Matching 401k, insurance about 50% less then mine (comparative). Vacations based on hours worked and 2 year sick/personal day rollover.

The day of reckoning is almost upon the old dealership 'You're lucky you have a job' mentality. Fixed Ops has been largely ignored and abused, now that good new techs are sparse and new parts guys are losing mentors, is it approaching crisis levels.

Check with the local High School Counselors; often they are a wealth of information on who is looking and who can do certain jobs.

(Not a manager, only a counterperson)

I barely broke into $45K last year, 48K year before.

I recently was approached by a headhunter and going in for an interview on Monday for parts job that could pay
$26/hr + overtime if required.

Been with same GM store for 41 years. PM for 25. Seems harder than ever. good better best and not good enough. Now they want us to check ebay and amazon for parts? wow, with any luck i can hold on one more year as a mgr. Tired of our guys being it seems blamed for not trying hard enough and most other things that go wrong with fixed ops. The insurance companies are now making a living off dictating our prices in the body shop and service. On and on and I won't miss it when i step away. Yes it is really hard to find good counter help and service techs in our area of Michigan.
