Per Job

Per Job

Postby Gerry Laughlin » Thu Aug 30, 2018 11:14 am

I was working yesterday with the parts manager at my Mazda store on the situation we have where it seems as though we are constantly running out of brake parts. We were looking at a number of things but I had one area stand out. Mazda does not have an ASR program like RIM, so settings in CDK like days supply settings and so on still apply. Everything was going fine until we hit Per Job. My memory gets a little sketchy here, but in the pre-RIM days I seem to remember that the Per Job amount controlled how many units of a part were used on a vehicle and kept the stocking amount in quantities that were divisible by the Per Job setting. In other words, having an uneven amount of brake rotors on the shelf is useless, two are used in each repair, so they should be stocked in sets of two. I know RIM understands this, all brake rotors at all of my GM stores have an even amount in stock. I am being told by CDK that Per Job in their system does not function that way and that it is now only just a minimum stocking level. So if Per Job is set to 2 it is totally possible to have a 3 rotors in stock, which is a waste, have 2 or 4, but never 3.
Is my memory failing, or did CDK used to treat Per Job as it was meant to be?
Thanks,
Gerry Laughlin

Its been a LONG time since I was on ADP/CDK but I am pretty sure if you set it a 2 you will always keep minimum of 2 and you could get 3 or more.

When I was at Mazda we had daily stock orders where I was at. Maybe this is one of those few instances where a min/max setting would work if daily stock orders are a reality in your area. Or maybe just some old school walk the bins before you place your stock order may be needed or a better review on what ADP spits out for your daily order. Nothing beats the mind of a good parts manager vs. any automated stocking system. I know what I said might be tough for a mega GM/Ford/any other make dealer, but this approach might be ideal for smaller operations.

I remember talking to a CDK rep a few years ago when I first started here and they do use the Per Job as a "workaround" because they don't really have a system of MIN/MAX like Reynolds does. Personally, I've never run into having an odd amount of rotors or having any more than what I set my Per Job at for that matter. Maybe I've just been lucky but the Per Job works fine for me with Toyota.

I did miss MIN/MAX but don't have any issues. Needed to adjust a lot of parts one at a time when I got here but it's been fine since

You have two things to consider; per Job (the number of pieces it takes to do a single job) and Pack and multiple P/M the multiple you order when you order the part. For instance, if it takes four of a number to do one job and you want to order in '4's' you would have '4 in the per job field and in the Pack and Multiple field you would have M 4; this means that whatever the BRP/BSL says, when the suggested order is prepared, you will have at least one job (4 pieces on the shelf) and when you order you will order in multiples of 4 pieces (4, 8, 12, 16, etc). The one possible drawback is if the part being ordered comes in a pack, such as 6 to a pack; you have to change the criteria a bit.

Run and English statement: SORT PART-NO. DICT LPTR to see all the fields of data available in CDK; they don't teach what their system can do, very well, any more, but there is a ton of data available if you know English and what data you are looking for.
