I understand what you are saying about there not being any profit here. Clearly the dealer is "eating" a lot of expense doing these free oil changes. We write off approx $20 on each one - more on some, less on others.
Camaro oil, like all things GM, is difficult to determine.
SI, Doc ID # 4998612 appears very clear. Use 19370233 OW-40.
However:
Camaro Owner's manual, SI, Doc ID # 4926189
Selecting the Right Engine Oil (6.2L (LT1) V8 Engine)
Selecting the right engine oil depends on both the proper oil specification and viscosity grade. See Recommended Fluids and Lubricants.
Specification
Use engine oils that meet the dexos2 specification. Engine oils that have been approved by GM as meeting the dexos2 specification are marked with the dexos2 approved logo.
Object ID: 2959961Click here for detailed picture of the image.
Caution: Failure to use the recommended engine oil or equivalent can result in engine damage not covered by the vehicle warranty.
Viscosity Grade
Use SAE 0W-40 viscosity grade engine oil.
When selecting an oil of the appropriate viscosity grade, it is recommended to select an oil of the correct specification. See “Specification” earlier in this section.
If 0W-40 dexos2 oil is not available, SAE 5W-30 dexos1 full synthetic engine oil may be used for street use.
NOTE THE LAST LINE OF THE ABOVE SELECTION.
Then there is SI DOC ID # 4578928 - which is the labor operation / payment selection document. This document is where I got the earlier quote. This document clearly spells out that LT1 without 1LE uses 5W30 Dexos 1.
So there you have it. Typical GM confusion. Depending on which document you look at and how you interpret that document is how you select the oil.
Based on the payment document - if a Camaro LT1 comes in our shop WITHOUT 1LE it will get 5W30 Dexos1 engine oil.
If a ZL1 comes in (LT4 engine) it gets the 0W40 with or without 1LE.
If a LT1 WITH 1LE comes in it gets 0W40.
