RIM impact on idle/obsolete inventory

RIM impact on idle/obsolete inventory

Postby mrjaygraham » Fri Nov 08, 2019 4:24 pm

I found a study that shows GM and Chrysler dealers have a higher % of non-RIM controlled aged parts than any other OEM!

Why would a GM store using RIM or a Chrysler store using ARO have any idle/obsolete?

Parts not being returned within time frame?
Unsold special orders not returned?
Non-RIM parts brought in for stock?

Any other reasons? What am I missing? Seems like there would be very little idle. GM/Chrysler PROS help me figure this one out!

Also, like Chrysler's ARO program, not all parts are RIM eligible. Was a great program when it was first implemented... Now, not so much!!

This pretty much explains it. RIM does NOT take back everything that they sent you 15 months earlier.

Can't begin to tell you how many 17+ month inventory over the years has had the RIM control order number on it that GM conveniently forgets to cover under RIM protection. For that reason and others, I take money out of my 688 account each month to subtract out of 242, to give me the great pleasure of tossing those parts into the dumpster.

I went from $18,000+ in 17+ month obsolescence to less than $1,500 in about 18 to 24 month time.

A couple of reasons regarding RIM:
1. Part Number Changes fall through the cracks and usually don't get returned through RIM.

2. Not all parts that are RIM Managed end up being on the RIM Return 15 months later.

Other reasons:
1. Return reserve gets less and less every year...When I first started managing my department 7 years ago we had $14K in return reserve for the year; it has decreased every year since and now will be down to a whopping $7K for this year. Half of when I started :o

2. I run a report every month when I do my returns so I know all of my oldest parts on the shelves; I also have an idea of discounts that I have acquired throughout the month and if I want to scrap a certain amount out of my inventory I can do this without hurting my 24200 account.

*I just had my physical inventory and was almost $15K over appreciation so we must be doing something right here
