HAZARDOUS WARRANTY RETURNS

Ok so I sent a fuel injector back UPS about 6 months ago. About 3 days later we got a letter from GM about using the 49 CFR regulation shipping instructions.

So I got another injector called back. did the paperwork and sent it back Central Transport. It was in a plain box and the driver asked it I had a flammable sticker. I told him no and he said he thought he had one in the truck but that it was ok because it was under 1000 pounds and he didn't have to report it anyway.

At this point I thought I was good.

Today we got another letter from GM. Same thing. Improperly shipped, use 49 CFR regulation shipping instructions.

WTF are 49 CFR shipping regulations and were do I find them.

I did a quick google search and all I got was ads trying to sell me stuff.

I know this is the better place to ask.

thanks

1st...go read this off Global
GCUS-9-5480

At least one person has to be HAZ-MAT certified to ship parts out. You will need to take the online class and get certified. Then anything considered Hazardous material needs to be shipped using proper labeling, etc. I am 0-2 as of recent due missed label. I had one, needed 2.

Hope this helps.

See document Reference Number: GCUS-9-5480 . this will explain some.

You should take a HAZMAT safety class to be compliant. See KPA or hazmatu (there are others)

Apparently after a couple phone calls I found out it was because it didn't have any labels on it.

Is there somewhere to reference what labels I need and what kind go on what box?

that certification crap is expensive!!!!

Yes the training is expensive. It needs to be renewed every 3 years. You also need hazmat certified boxes and proper labels.

One aspect i dislike about hazmat shipping is you do it so infrequently, you need to 'reteach' yourself how to do it correctly every time.

Can I somehow find out if another dealer in the area has hazmat cert and bring my parts to them to return? I have about 40 belt tensioners here that need to get the eff out

I am certified and it is a nightmare for me every time that I have to deal with it.

I have trained my staff to save the boxes that come with the Haz Mat labels on them so we can reuse them to ship my 1 or 2 WPC parts back every year.

I feel like they are just looking for a mistake so they can debit you back. I have been fortunate so far that none of my returns have been debited but if I miss dotting 1 i or crossing 1 t; I know they will be whacking me.

Air bags are an totally different animal as we have to get them on a pallet and wrapped them up then label them (Takata actually has a printable label); at least those I don't have to worry about being charged back for anything though.

First after multiple WPC returns and talking to GM i have found out the ONLY real Hazmat items that are in question that you need to worry about are those that touch fuel some how . Even though things like shocks and struts are considered to be hazardous they are not to be shipped hazmat or GM will debit you . SO BE CAREFUL

Second this is where i have gotten everything needed for Hazmat shipping products
