Hello all.

Newbie to the GM world of parts.

Did Ford parts for a long time but got let go in a buy-out and now I find my self working at a small GM dealership and trying to figure out the GM parts system.

Anywho, just looking for a basic list that will make looking up GM parts a lot easier and quicker. Example: paint is group 8800

Thanks

If it is an old dealer see if there are any old GM Catalogs, if there is right in the front are pictures of what the groups have. 00 Engine, 01 Oil Related, 02 Electrical, 03 Emissions/Exhaust, 04 Trans, 05 Wheels/axles 06 Front Chasis, 07 Frame/rear chasis 08 Front Body, 09 AC, 10 Interior Electrical doors, 11 seats, 12 rear body, 13 stupid stuff, 14 interior, 15 rear and roof interior.. Jeez I have been doing this stuff too long to remember all that stuff!

You can use your EPC to help learn the group numbers.
Once you navigate to your year make and model you will see all the groups for that model. Remember that trucks and cars are not entirely the same, once you go past group 9, there are different. once there you will see all the major groups. It gives you an overview of what each group has in it. now pick a group. at this point you have two options. Most people, I suspect goes straight to the illustrations, but you don't have to,i click the tab to the right of it . It will be labeled Part Group Index. Once there it will give you all the sub groups. This is good to hone your skills. Once you get the idea, of what is in each main group you can start using shortcuts on the EPC. Just as an example you can put in search, 5. Rotor. That will bring up anything listed in group 5000 that has the word Rotor. Which brake rotors are in subgroup 5809. I hope this helps.

This is great advice. I am also still learning and have a quick cheat sheet and also a more extensive list posted on my board right in front of my computer. Learning the group numbers and going right into the group when looking up parts is one of the key things my training manager told me to do. It's always a wake up call when I ask my trainer for help and he spits off the exact group right off the top of his head for any fricking part I am looking for! Takes years of experience to learn them all. It's sometimes embarrassing when I am looking for parts with a tech or customer and can't find them right away.

Fast way to learn it is to force yourself to type the group number.
Example: type in the word rotor and instead of just clicking the link to the group, backout of it and type it (5.809) in.
It will make it easier to remember them.
