Opinion on Idle Inventory & Obsolescence

Opinion on Idle Inventory & Obsolescence

Postby aleclarson » Wed Apr 28, 2021 5:43 pm

Hey everyone, I have somewhat of an odd topic for the forum, apologies if it's in the wrong place. I'm one of those ebay/amazon guys that buys older or idle stock from local dealerships. I don't have a background in the industry as a parts manager and I joined this group/forum to hopefully learn as much as I can about how the idle inventory works and if its even a big problem.

If you guys have any tips for me on how I can find more OEM inventory, approach new dealerships or heck, even if you want to sell me a load of parts that would be greatly appreciated.

I've been in business since 2016, small 3500sqft warehouse and have roughly $550k in inventory at any given time. Feel free to pick my brain on anything ecommerce - fitment data charts, returns, pricing, software etc. I'd share essentially everything I know, been through all the headaches.

What brand(s) of parts are you interested in buying?

GM, Ford, Mopar, Toyota, Motorcraft, Acdelco. Not picky at all on any brand and I actually don't mind buying older or odd parts. I just generally try to stay away from larger sheet metal, glass, fascia bumpers etc just because I'm 99% online and I've yet to find an effective way to ship those.
