Our parts dept currently is open m-f 7:30-5:30 and 1 man working every 4th Sat 8:30-1:00 pm. We are considering going to 7-7 M-F and 8-5 Sat. I have 3 counter guys plus myself doing 225-250k per month in gross sales. I will be adding another counterman to help cover the hours and will now need to have 2 people on Sat. My hours will be 7-5 M-F and I would like any scheduling suggestions. I am willing to consider pretty much any option such as 4 day work week or maybe occasional 3 day week. We have 18 techs who will be working 4 day weeks with 3 groups rotating to fill the extended hours.

Hi PDMorgan,
I would contact Lloyd Schiller to get some scheduling for your countermen. He has some great stuff on this from 3/13 to 4/10 scheduling. You can contact (800) 321-5312 (WD&S Office) and they can give you his phone number. He's the best I've seen with ideas for scheduling your fixed operations.

3-13's, while providing a "paper" solution, just doesn't seem very practical to me. I would think that both the rate of error and accident would increase substantially.

put the concern out to your people and ask THEM for a solution. you're a lot more likely to get buy-in if they're part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

One suggestion may be to have 2 guys working Tuesday to Saturday and stagger the start and end times for your guys working Monday to Friday. We have extended hours as well, and this seems to work for us.

We are now running the hours you are considering. I have one guy who works Tues - Saturday, but doesn't ever close during the week. We rotate one other guy in every third Saturday. The week he is to work Saturday he also closes. The Friday after this long week is given off and he has a three day weekend. This works pretty well for us.

we are open from 7-8 monday thru friday and 8:30 - 5 on saturday. to cover all three counters, we have a front counterman to work 7-5 everyday and one saturday a month. the other front counter guy works 8-6 on monday, then 7-5 tue to friday. we have one man working 8-6 tue to friday and he works every saturday, but he's off on mondays. tech countermen (2)works 7:30-6. the parts manager stays until 8 pm three nites a week and i (asst parts manager) stay 2 nites a week. managers don't work weekends.
