Help!! Need input to increase OSF I am stuck at 72.3% and can not seem to get any higher. I have no problems with SDF. Any suggestions would be welcome
Actually, SDF is Same Day Fill - Of all the parts requested by the customer, what percentage of parts were you able to deliver today regardless if it was in stock or you picked up parts from another supplier.
OSF is Off the Shelf Fill - What percentage of the parts requested were available on your shelves.
Probably the only way to increase OSF would be to carry a wider inventory. Since you say you don't have a problem getting parts in the same day, then there's a possibility for you to inventory those parts. I assume you track 'lost sales' on parts that are not on the shelf even if you get them that day...
Anyway, one thing to keep in mind is the balance between the cost of getting parts from outside sources and the price you pay to carry all the parts you need. What's the best level of OSF out there? Is 72% reasonable or will it add additional expense (to be passed to customers) to increase you fill rate? We are lucky to have two huge wholesale parts dealers within 2 miles of our shop (and they sell cheap: cost+5%)
You could have a phase-in problem, an order guide problem, or both. Examine the inventory control system guides and setups. Also, make sure all lost sales are being logged and all emergency purchases from aftermarket vendors are sold through the system under the OE number.
