Anyone remember GM Goodwrench Rustproofing? The program had a lifetime warranty. We have a customer with a valid warranty and valid claim but all telephone numbers are disconnected. Can't find anyone at GM who even remembers the program much less how to handle this request.

Have any of you dealt with this program since the bankrupty? If so, any information would be appreciated.

Wasn't that program administered through MIC? What year is the vehicle?

Thanks Mr. Ed, I even left a message for M.L. to see if he remembered anything - haven't heard back.

Gerry, MIC did administer it but all the phone numbers I have dealing with the program have been disconnected.

I have found a couple of people. One said the program was completely abandoned in 2010 after actually being shut down in 1992. Yep, they tell me GM honored the program for 18 years after shut down. Still don't quite understand how you can walk away from a "lifetime" warranty back in 1992 which was only about 3-5 years after we stopped selling the stuff.

The other person is still looking for an official GM position. We will see.

As for the vehicle it is the nicest looking 1987 K1500 you will ever see in the rust belt.

Most of those programs are limited to a refund of the cost of the program in the event it is discontinued. I know this isn't what the customer wants to hear, but considering what my 87 pickup looks like I would say he got his monies worth. So all in all I would apologize, then find out what he paid for the program and get my DFOM to refund that amount plus another $1000 towards a new truck and call it a day.

Well guess what has been on my list of things to do for the last 4-5 months. Yes, this 1987 truck is back with another rust claim.

You probably won't believe this but last time we fixed this truck at the manufacturer's expense. What an interesting situation that was.

Now I can't even get the manufacturer to go on record with a response to the question of what do we do now? I have been in this business for sometime now and can not recall a situation where the manufacturer will not answer the question of whether this is still covered or not. This puts the dealership in a really unusual position and I am not comfortable being put there.

I see three possible paths:

1 - Have the customer create a BBB case, which will (hopefully) force a factory response.

2 - Suggest the customer file a lawsuit. Not the best situation for anyone. Actually suggested by DMA!!!

3 - Deny coverage and hope we don't get pulled into #2 for breach of warranty.

I am leaning toward the BBB. What are your thoughts? I would appreciate any input from anyone. I have been working on this one since April 2015. The customer has been extremely patient. I have contacted the regional customer manager - no response.

Maybe start by creating an issue on DFOAB or on GM's twitter/facebook page and shame them into doing something.

Once things become public, issues sometimes have a way of working out...

I'm a full supporter of public shaming when conventional ways to get something accomplished fail miserably

I found an old GM GOODWRENCH Vehicle Care Product Catalog:

Vehicle Protection Products - MIC 1-800-243-5400
*Rust-Proofing Policies
*Paint-Sealant Policies
*Fabric-Protector Policies

Of course the phone number is null and void

That book you found. Does it actually have the policies in it?
