ok my service counterman is related to the service manager who has been here for 30 years. now how can i motivate this employee to do what i need him to do? Everytime I ask for something or complain i get told "its only a job".. Firing this person is out of the question. So i need advice. The owners love him and love the service manager... but i have to get him on board with the program...

Fixed Ops Management Rule #1:

If you don't have the full support of the Dealer or executive manager to run your department as it SHOULD be run - find another gig!

If nepotism is allowed at your store, you will probably never overcome it. But, you should sit down with the Service Manager first and explain your dilemma with his relative. If he is not receptive to helping you or takes his relative's side, I would move up the line to whoever is ultimately in charge of the store and run it by them. If you get the same kind of response, update your resume and start looking. It should never be "out of the question" for a department manager to discipline or terminate an employee for rightful cause.
