Assistant Pts. Mgr. job description

I'm looking for some input from everyone about what your assistant parts managers do for you. I recently took over parts for a busy multi-franchise (3 lines) store and inherited the assistant manager. He moved from counterman to assistant manager a few years ago under the old manager and as far I see he inputs the daily orders and does all the posting. That's about all that's ever been expected in his current job. Really doesn't know a lot about ADP outside of counterman type functions and posting - like can't run an MGR or open inovice report.

Seems to me that I could hire a full time clerk to do that for 1/3 of the money.

So what exactly does your assistant manager do for you?

IMO, he should be able to do you all your duties in case you are not there. If he cannot and you need an assistant, you need to train him or hire a true assistant.

I was out for by pass surgery for 2 months and my assistant pretty much did everything I would have done. When I came back there were a few very minor issues that cropped up but overall he did what he was trained by me to do. The management gave him a little extra for his efforts too which he did appreciate.

Ditto.......... Although I have to admit, the longest I have been gone is about 10 days. Glad to hear all went well on the surgery Camaroman. I have a great crew and came back to only a couple of minor issues (mostly accounting). Giving your crew ALL of the knowledge needed to do the job does NOT put yours at risk, it only shows you ARE a "manager" not just a "boss".

Funny thing here is that the service manager is here since 1968 and despises having to show someone else how to do something. He is concerned with job security. Everyone can be replaced wether you trained them or someone else did.

I have always operated the departments in a way that all employees should be able handle everything if I'm out. I've just never actually had a designated assistant manager. I generally have a lead counter guy for wholesale / retail counter and one for the tech counter. who oversee things and it's always run very well. I guess the decision is to train or just eliminate position.

Thanks for the input guys.

I'd offer him the opportunity to learn to do the position, or the opportunity to move back to a regular counterman. If he's good, he'll be excited to learn everything, and he'll look forward to wringing everything he can out of ADP. If he's not, he'll be content to just sit at the counter and hand out parts, and should be compensated appropriately.

I have my counterman trained to do virtually everything I do. He still has some training to go, some things he hasn't quite grasped, gets sloppy, doesn't listen. I have a very thoroughly written printout of daily duties if I am gone. I have only taken about 2 weeks vacation since I got here 4 years ago. I'm not afraid to teach him, he just doesn't take a big interest in learning it but he isn't technically the assistant manager either.
