Odometer Question

So, we have a unique issue unfolding here...

We have a very loyal customer with a 2002 Bonneville that just turned 1,000,000 miles. He's in here every 2-3 weeks for an oil change so we all knew this was coming soon. The problem is, his car hit 1M but his odometer is stuck at 999,999 and won't go any further. He wants his odometer to continue to show his mileage as it is a company vehicle and he turns his mileage in for tax purposes. Any ideas?

Couldn't your Delco Electronics Servicenter reset it for you?

Yes, but that's not really the customer's preference because he doesn't want to have a sticker on the dash saying the odometer has been rolled back. I can't blame the guy, really.

On Chrysler cars there are some modules that track mileage as well. Do any do that on GM cars that you can take a reading from each visit and document on his repair orders? Then he can use the repair order for his tax document. Just a thought

In most states, it's the law that you must have the sticker if the odo has been replaced or turned back. You probably should let the customer know that and position the sticker as a badge of honor. "Wow!!! One million miles and still purring. A badge of honor for your great maintenance."

I tried to do that with the owner of a 1987 4x (stock and cherry) that is a loyal customer. Unfortunately he is an Undercover Cop so I could not get it to fly. we have a couple of 3.8s that come in that have well over 300K on them and could not get the customer to trade them in for anything!

Volvo had a customer, "Irv Gordon," who they made into a celebrity in their national advertising. He's now passed the 3,000,000 mile mark and is working on the 4th time around the odometer.

Two things come to mind from this statement:

1. Volvo didn't engineer the odometer to be useless at a million miles, it rolled over.

2. A million miles on a GM vehicle is equivalent to five million on a Volvo but feels like ten.
