So just curious what you guys are doing when its slow. I mean my shop is keeping busy, outside wholesale is dead so we in parts are really getting to the point of boredom. I am a fairly new parts manager with only a year under my belt. What are some ideas that I can do on slow days. My parts inventory was just recently also done a few weeks ago so bins are clean. Any reports etc. I should be running looking at? Again we are really slooow right now wholesale. Thanks for ready my post!

If there is no new stock to put away and no need for bin counts sometimes I will go through all of our used inventory and run the VINS for recalls.

Go out and visit your customers. Even if they don't have any business for you it goes a long way for them to meet you or your guys face to face. Hand out pens and pads, maybe stop at a shop that doesn't buy from you... Bring 'em donuts!

I can't imagine being caught up with everything and needing more business. My lazy counter guy just gave me notice(YES!) and I got lucky and immediately hired an energetic youngster that wants to work and learn. He did more cleaning and locating parts with no bin location than the other guy did in a year. So, my warehouse is getting cleaned up real quick. But, our business is going up so fast that I am having to build tables upstairs and in a corridor to store all the extra stock and special orders. We went from around an average of +/-$800/day under the previous parts and service managers to over $1,200/day last month under a new service manager and myself, a new parts manager. I'm struggling to get caught up and get my floors uncovered so I can sweep and mop. My bonus checks have been real nice. The powers that be have added two tiers of bonuses to go along with the +/-50% increase in profit. I don't know what we are doing that y'all could do. I just know that our lube guys(2 last year. 4 now) are suggesting everything under the Sun and we have added an express advisor for a total of 3 and another tech for a total of 4 to keep up with the volume that used to come in and now the volume has gone even higher. Maybe, Field Of Dreams says it best, "If you build it, he will come." If you don't have the techs, lube guys, writers, or parts, you can't do the job.

What? I just watched that (again) a couple years ago. These younger DP or GM find this stuff and think they found the magic carrot!
