How long does it take to train a new guy?
My 2 person staff and I have been around a long, long time, and business is moving to where we are staying busier than ever and we are also open now on Saturdays. We have brought on another member from another department to work with us part-time during the week, and on Saturdays.
Currently, we keep him in parts as long as possible, and one of us is staying with him on Saturday until he is up to speed.
He is fairly bright, has mechanical knowledge, and is picking things up. We are working him through the catalogue trainings, and CDK training. What kills us is all the one offs, -you know what I mean -> do this, unless it is a 2006, because that year…, you can look that up, but it isn’t in the book, just remember this rhyme…, and all of that jazz.
I wish it was faster, because, well, we don’t want to be here Saturdays.
I am probably holding on too tight, expecting one of my veterans. That ain’t gonna happen to soon.
Not that it matters, - Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover – ADP/CDK

It has been forever, since we have trained anyone, how long until you have all felt comfortable?

I have been doing this for 30yrs and pretty much everyday I run into something I never knew. It really depends on the person, I had a girl start for me a little over 2yrs ago with no GM exp. and in a month it was like she was here for years, she decided to leave for greener pasteurs, which weren't so green once she got there, but thats another story. Brought another young lady in and she is doing good so far, taking a little longer but I think she will do fine.

I've got a 'new guy; that's been here over 2 yrs and still has issues with minor things. I told upper management after 6 weeks that I didn't have faith that he could, would, or wanted to learn. I was told to continue training him. At what point is enough enough????

You really need to be detail oriented in this business and it does not take very long at all to see when someone isn't
