My Body Shop manager and I are having a difference of opinion. I say that we have to replace all the labels that are not salvageable after an accident. He says that it is not needed unless the insurance company or customer request them. By law I thought we had to do the emission label ?
Anybody know where I can find out for sure?

I don't know what the law states but one could assume that since the manufacturer installs the labels they must be required. If they weren't required do you think GM or Ford, etc., would install VIN specific labels?

Things to consider?

1 - Why not install them? You make money selling these labels. Insurance companies always pay for them around here.

2 - Why risk the fine? If they are required you can imagine the penalty. One could assume it is along the same lines as a converter removal. After all you are altering the emission "package".

3 - see #1 - sell and make the money. Simple

Yeah I am all for it but he (body shop manager) does not figure them and when I put them on the RO he gets bent that it doesn't match the estimate. I told him that A figure them on the estimate of B. file a supplement. The last time I did it he wanted me to discount other parts the price of the labels So I just billed the body shop for the labels. Needless to say the guy pisses me off.

Sounds like he just doesn't want to do his job.

It is a violation of the Clean Air Act and must be replaced. In California there are additional regulations that carry a $5,000.00 fine for this violation.
