coolant leaking intake emissions??

GM seems to have a major problem with coolant leaking intake manifold gaskets. The gaskets are a 3/50 component. However, since it is not effecting emissions, should it be a extgended warranty repair and not a emissions?

In GM's world the manifold itself is covered under the emissions warranty but not the gasket. Gaskets are basic 3/36. Doesn't make any sense to me since either can and do cause coolant leaks that don't effect emissions.

we have 2 claims, both under 3 years, but over 36k but under 50K. Bpth customers have GMPP. We submitted them to GMPP. Wins rejected them saying covered by original warranty. not sure of the exact wordings. Our AVM has copies of the RO's. All of us feel it is a 3/36. But WIns is handling some of the trucks as 3/50 on the mqanifold gasket. Also have some we have submitted as a goodwill without a policy "A" and paid when betgween 36K-50K. Confusing to say the least.

We have had a lot of failures of this type. It has gotten so bad that our trade in appraisals are being effected. My advice: Be careful. This problem has led to many engine failures down the road. The "K" engine is the one effected. Some GM models used this engine in the 1995 model year through 1998. We have found several early model 99 models with same problem. If you do not replace both upper and lower parts and the mileage is over 50K it will come back in about a year. If the coolant gets into the engine lube system the damage doesn't always show up right away. Its a disgrace to have had such a great engine and then let some engineer(s) change it to this degree. General Motors needs to step up to the plate on this one as it IS effecting the resale value of these vehicles. Will the Fed get involved if it is emmissions? (Intake & exhaust manifolds are emission parts)

In my experience as a technician, introducing coolant or water into the engine has a huge effect on the 02 sensor; creating a raised emissions problem, and sometimes even requiring replacement of the 02 sensor.

Try dumping a coolant water mixture into the intage, and you will see what I mean. I would think for these instances the coverage would fall under the emissions warranty. If water is getting in the oil, that would be a mechanical failure and be covered as such.

the labor time guide specifies whether the component is covered by the emissions warranty and should be used as a rule of thumb regarding coverage. some intake manifold gaskets do carry an "e" policy designation and are therefore covered. as far as effecting emissions there are arguments both ways.

by the way...gm isnt the only one with intake manifold gasket problems.

I do not think LTG has repaired thier takeaway Policy identification yet. But the P&P manual does NOT list the intake gasket as an emissions. You are correct, sometimes WINS will recognize the intake as emissions. Also sometimes GMPP will not pay becasue WIns says it is EMissions, showed our rep several weeks ago claims paid and not paid by GMPP, and emissions without any special authorizations, He does not know why it is this way, Confusing to say the least
