Service advisory pay scales and pay structures?

Postby Helf8704 » Tue Mar 09, 2004 5:57 pm

I am just posting to get an idea of how service advisors are paid. I am going to be graduating from college in about a month with degrees in Automotive Service Management and Business Management and am looking into this position. I have over a year of management experience in a retail setting and over a year experience as a tech. I just wanted to get an idea how advisors are paid and how much? I have a buddy who graduated about a year ago and he just started at a dealership as an advisor and is being paid $8.00 an hour plus 1% of monthly gross sales. Is this normal? Any insight into this question would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,
Jason

That would sorta depend on what the gross sales were.....

Just about every dealership has a unique pay plan for advisors, almost always a monthly "base" making up a relatively small portion of the total pay and some sort of comission plan making up the larger portion. Many pay plans include a "CSI" element.

I think it's a bit unusual for an advisor to be paid "hourly", but that's just me....

Good luck and fasten your seat belt....

Service advisor does seem to be one job that is really dependent on the local job market for valuation. Regardless of how the individual dealership gets there, the end annual salary is what I look at (real dollars not potential dollars). Here in my neck of the woods of the NJ and NYC metro area, advisors hover in $55k range some a whole lot more, some less, but still in that area. In the Midwest, where the job market is much tighter than might be down in the $30s in California that might be in the $100s. So much depends on location not just state/region but area of state. For instance Florida, I know advisors making close to $100k a year in the Tampa area, but yet two hours away in greater Gainesville area they might only make $45k.

Jason,

I see we have similar backgrounds. I worked at a tech then went back to school and got an ASM degree.

If you haven't already started, start sending out your resume. Good advisors are hard to come by. It takes a balance of Great selling and customer handling skills.

When I was near graduating from Ferris State, I sent out 30 resumes and had 10 interviews in a 2 week period. And it all happened before school was over. I ended up taking a week off to move and started working imediately.

With your credentials, you are really unlimited in where you go in the automotive business. You should also look at working directly for a manufacturer.

Good luck,
Ron
