Rabbi,
I hate to be the blunt one, but I'm going to be. I've been in your exact situation.

Either get busy living or get busy dying.

What's the best way to handle this?

In general, I am seeing this kind of thing at a lot of automotive business of many kinds.

Over the past few decades the teaching of values, common sense and fundamental skills has been replaced by spending hours pounding the "facts" of global cooling or warming (depending on the decade) and similar nonsense into the heads of those soon to populate the work force. A country of mostly ignorant people is well on it's way to reality. And, many of them vote! It's going to be fun.

Tough to handle if you are not the one in charge. Maybe it's time to launch your own show of some kind. Then, hire slow and fire fast to maintain a reasonable level of staff quality.
