In house computer system

Postby Michael Moese » Thu Oct 07, 1999 2:20 pm

Our dealership is soon to embark on the purchase of a new in-house computer system. We are currently on ADP's 8800 system. We are looking to go to a networked workstation setup, with PC'c at each station. Does anyone have input about the offerings of UCS, R&R and ADP relative to this new type of dealer system. Any pro's or con's? Thanks for any input

Michael,

My advice is to be very careful I am working with a dealer right now who is installing ADP. We did an exaustive search and a very structured review/analysis of vendors. We still have been surprised/disappointed by the install process. It has been a very difficult time.

We did not end up with a client server system. That is what we wanted but it really wasn't available after Dealer solutions was bought by ADP. Neither of the big 2 use a "real" network. They are serial connections "ports." All in all my advice would be to wait. If you can't wait be very cautious and buy right because you'll want to upgrade in the not to distant future.

Feel free to call me I would be happy to share more with you.

We too have been shopping around for a new system. The best we have seen is the new system by EDS, Windows NT and Browser Based.
Their Parts Catalog is also revolutionary.
These folks seem to have come from behind and is now out front breaking new ground.

About five years ago I decided I wanted a PC based system. We settled on ADAM (ADAM-SYSTEMS.COM) and have been using it ever since. We use a Netware server and have about 25 stations and have had very little trouble with the system. ADAM provides software support (about $600 a month) and I get hardware and netware support locally (about $200 a month). We may not have all the bells and whistles of the big guys but we don't use all the capabilities we have now. Considering quotes I have received from the others, I figure we are saveing at least $3,000 a month, that's $180,000 over the last five years. Everyone has the power of a PC, we have very few problems and tech support is good. I recommend checking out the alternatives to ADP & R&R.
