Shop Porters:
Porters are a win-win deal!
If you don't have at least one, get one, and if you do have one-How well are you utilizing him/her?
I have 2 shop porters.($9-$10 pr/hr guys.) First, I was concerned about affording these guys but WOW, what a nice pay off!
At first, they were just managing the lot, tagging cars etc. But then we tried this:
We outfitted them with walkie-talkies based at dispatch. Our advisors now could intercom to dispatch and have little old Mrs. Smiths car warmed-up at the door. Nice for C.S.I..
But the greater perk was untilizing them to ready cars for the techs. Within a couple of weeks we got the techs in the habit of forseeing the jobs end and summoning their next job 10-15 mins ahead of completion. Now, their next car with parts pre-pulled was waiting for them in the shop or just outside, ready to go. Shop productivity has risen dramatically!, not to mention the lift in attitude and enthusiasm in the shop.

C.S.I. boost.
Greater productivity, more shop hours produced.
Happier techs-my God, is that even possible!?
More money, more money, more money.

P.S. Just before close they also give the shop a once over, coiling hoses,garbage and a sweep.

Why didn't we do this sooner!

How many techs, SA's etc do you have. In other words how big a shop do you need to afford ONE!

Current shop has 2.5 advisors and 8 techs-smaller shop. Shop productivity has risen to 180%. These guys are crankin'! and liking doing it.
C.S.I. has also risen from the high 80's to 95-97% rolling 3 month avg. Granted many other things have contributed to that success, but the porters were a part of the equation.
