We pay our Tech's .2 to perform inspection.
Our feelings are that the Tech's work piecework and we will not ask them to work for free.
We then have them fill out an inspection form that has a copy for the Tech and one for Management. The Tech notes the recommended upsell and then what was actually sold. This way we can track Advisor closing ratios.

Throw my two cents in here...

I have my writers perform a walk around, lifting the included. This covers a major portion of the inspection. My techs see this as somewhat of a compromise, they don't have to do all of it, and the writers really get a lot more sales as a result.

GM store, 13 techs 3 writers.

Ford, Lincoln-Mercury Service Dept. with 6 advisors and 42 techs. I have done a number of things over the years to get proper inspections completed. I found it did not make any difference how hard you pushed the inspection did not match the vehicles needs but what the technician liked to do. We started a Quick service team about a year ago, it now has 16 members. I have taken the inspections away from the regular line techs and my Quick service team does them all. I spiff the quick service team members $5.00 per inspection and I get a full inspection every visit, every vehicle, every time. To offset the expense I told my regular line techs that they no longer get paid full flat rate to do qucik service work. They can clean a ticket and they do but they get paid at the same rate as a quick service team member. Increased GP by 8% to 74.8% overall. Much better system than having the regular line technicians take their productive time to complete a free inspection including a full brake inspection.
