Dispatcher Job Description

I would like input on the duties and responsibilities that are placed on Dispatchers. I have a 32 bay dual franchise service department. We have 5 Service Advisors that are not involved in dispatching. I would also be interested in any modification ideas with dispatching.

Dispatcher Job Description

Just to pull out a job description from one of our manuals I get something like this:

The Dispatcher will be responsible for maintaining a smooth flow of work to each mechanic and for ensuring that each item on the repair order has been thoroughly completed before returning vehicle to customer. She/he will report to the Shop Foreman and Service Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
To receive original and duplicate copies of all repair orders from Service Salesmen; to record work on route sheet and to send copy of repair order to Parts Salesman.

To issue repair order to mechanic and to have work as outlined on repair order performed.

To make periodic checks with mechanic on work in progress and to advise Shop Foreman if assistance becomes necessary.

To be prepared to give accurate estimates of time of completion for each repair order written; to advise if car is to be completed before or after original estimate.

To receive hard copy of repair order from mechanic or Shop Foreman when work is
completed; to record completion of work on route sheet and to deliver triplicate copy of repair order to Parts Driver.

To make sure that there is no more than one R.O. per mechanic at any given time.

To sign R.O. signifying that the work has been completed.

To clock mechanics time both on and off with every R.O.

That at least is a start.
