Tech Training Pay...again

I have always paid techs there average day for when they go off for training. I even pay an additional day to cover the 4-5 hour drive each way, even if they do not take off of work to accomplish the drive. I think this is fair.

I have just hired a few new techs, and they are in telling me that I am very generous with my training pay. Other places, they say, pay nothing up to $80.00 per day of actual training.

What are you guys paying your techs for offsite training? Are you being "fair" or are you basing your pay on the market?

Almost all of our techs are paid on flat rate. We pay our techs based on their average daily hours turned. If a tech averages 10.5 hours a day, that's what he's paid. If he's turning 6, he's paid 6. Techs shouldn't lose money for going to training and they also should not make more money at training than they do while they are working.

For those paying 8.0 hours plus expenses:

8.0 at there flat rate dollar amount?

What if they dont usually turn 8.0 hours?

Is the 8 hour thing just the easiest fair way to not turn this into a molehill?
