Technician Training Expense Projections

Technician Training Expense Projections

Postby Alan D. Goff » Thu Jan 11, 2001 7:48 am

I am the shop foreman of a small to mid sized GM dealership and deal with technician training. What type of formula should be used to project expenses for training for the upcoming year? We have 15 techs, using a 5 day out of dealership figure and 4 hours in dealership training per month for each tech, along with the IDL training fee, this comes in around $30,000. Is this figure in the ball park for other dealers? (Most of the techs are young and have limited GM training, but are very good techs.

Asking for two reasons, one is for the yearly cost projections and two what other dealers are investing in training per tech.

thanks

We are a small Pontiac/GMC store and I currently have 5 techs involved in training. All of it is done in house through IDL. (except of course the hands on courses required for certification) I generally try to schedule each tech for 1 class per month. Of course it depends on the IDL course offerings. Using this as a guide, I figure my training expense to be $10,000, including IDL fees, tech pay, (I do pay them the time they spend in IDL only), and any other misc training courses. (ie: local venders, etc.)I would have to say your forecast is in line with mine.
