technology in the service department

Postby robc » Wed Oct 02, 2002 10:31 am

I am looking for unique ideas on how people are using technology in the service department. And don't be shy with the small ideas that might add just a few bucks. For instance, I heard of shops that use PDAs to pull up real-time RO information and estimating.

And, for what I think is the first time ever, I am asking for vendors of such wiz-bang product to contact me. I am thinking of a new feature in the Service Manager newsletter on technology so all the ideas you have can really help.

You can post here or email me directly -- Thanks!!!

PDA's can be used to pull diagnostic codes from most vehicles. I don't remember the websites, but try a search under OBD or On Board Diagnostics.

We have a Volkswagen shop that I have setup a wireless LAN for our technicians. VW offers service bulletin and technical information over the internet. We have a program available to our technicians for purchasing laptops through a payroll deduction option. We have 8 technicians who have taken part. Their laptops are setup on the wireless LAN, we have purchased Refelctions licences so they can punch on and off their jobs from their toolboxes, rahter than sharing greenscreens and taking precious wall space. They have been informed that the LAN is monitored, and after one year no tech has abused the privelage of the T1 access. They have been happier, more productive, and up-to-date.
