Tech tools

Very, very small shop. One tech with 30 plus years worth of experience who mostly services our import line. Every once in awhile our import guy is asked to work on GM products, and since we are Pontiac and Buick, we dont often see a truck. But, when we do, it seems like there is often a tool problem. So far, the tools have been cheap - the last two were $18 and $31. I know this may not be worth talking about, but when a tech is working on a job and he doesnt have the right tools, and they are cheap tools, who buys the tool? Since they are for trucks that we dont sell or service often, and since he does have what seems to be an appropriate amount of tools to do the work he was hired for, and since no one else in the shop has the tools which may mean they are very limited use tools, and since I dont think the guy is working me, the shop has bought the tools. Seems fair to me, but in this day of cost cutting, am I being to easy on him? Does anyone have a written policy on tech tools?

rule of thumb for a tech, if you have to borrow more than twice it is a tool you need to buy. in your situation where it is a vehicle that you service very infrequently you did the right thing.

I'm with the other post. If the tool is for the shop (vehicle) buy it. I'd keep it in my tool room, not the tech's box.
