Where do All the People Go??

I dunno, but it'll be a bit rough for some of them for awhile.

Young 'uns with degrees can probably find other work. Old duffers like me, without a formal education, well......

I lost my job 9 months ago. I'm glad it happened then rather than now. I was able to land a plum position (auto related but non-dealership) without quite so much competetion.

Good luck to everyone out there.

That which does not kill us only makes us stronger.

Cheers

And a few of us ole Duffers are still in the dealer world in fear of some of the younger guys getting hired to replace us before our time.

Hate to say it....and maybe I shouldn't....but any old veterans who have worked their way up to a very handsome level of pay are particularly at risk, in my opinion....and doubly so if you're not right in step with whatever the DP has in mind for the future. That's what happened to me, at least, and I don't fault the dealer. What DP would pay top dollar for a manager who was no longer on the same page as he was?

Well, anyhow, just be careful out there.

Good luck to all

The techs, whether they be good or bad, either expand or launch their backyard shops at a rate never seen before.

The underground auto repair economy is about to explode.

Not to rain on anyones parade but the "underground auto repair" has a short lived life. I've been around 30 plus years and seen a lot of Tech's jump ship and do real well for awhile in the underground. It only takes a few years without the support of dealer training and materials to find you have no idea how to work on the cars anymore. Things change to fast and if you don't invest big bucks to keep up you'll become the corner gas station of the past. I really think this whole thing stinks and loosing good tech's is not going to help GM or Chrysler.

Some will move on to other industries...

I'm going to do my best to put the good ones to work. Currently looking for two top flight Service Advisors, and three quality Chrysler Techs.....

I think we're going to see the cream rising to the top and the rest will have to go elsewhere. Sometimes we hire and hang on to any warm body because good experienced help is hard to find. Shouldn't be that way any more.

The good/trained, experienced people will find a job with another dealer eventually. Just like any other closure the market will become flooded with applicants which will push wages down until the number of people looking for jobs declines again. Hopefully the best people will be left but there will be no guarantees. I see a lot of the higher paid/ older guys getting demotions and/or walking papers and being replaced with some of the younger people replacing them.

How timely that I just read this. Often it may appear that an older person is replaced because of their age and/or high pay whereas sometimes it is this Lion mentality that is the problem.

"The dominant male lion becomes very lazy once he has the pride under his command. He sleeps most of the day, and the other lions do the hunting for him. Initially, he can face any challenge from younger males, but the day will come when his lazy, only-hanging-in-there lifestyle will catch up with him."

Workplace lesson: Work hard to keep the success you've attained! We've all seen execs who, after making their way to the top of the heap, sit back and basically do nothing, firmly believing that they've "earned" the right to relax and be paid for it. Now that times are harder and organizations are anxious to cut off any extra "fat," I hope they've let go of their complacency and are working hard once more to prove their worth.
