What are you guys paying your techs for Multi-point inspections?

I do not pay them any extra, but usually only require/request them when doing lof or rotate or inspections.

If the tech is under the hood or under the car for something quick, they are usually good in notifying me of anything they see, they just dont go hunting as deep then.

I am interviewing for a new tech, and his old shop paid .3 additional for MPI's on vehicles with over 20,000 miles.

Our techs do not get paid to do the MPI. This is a simple and effective upsell tool that everyone in the store can benefit from.
Most techs already look the vehicle over for upsell items anyway. You might have a few techs who will complain. They will see the positive things the MPI brings to the table when a oil change suddenly turns into a 3-5 hour RO. It is also great for CSI.

We don't pay anything for the MPI. We only do them on any vehicle that gets an LOF. I havn't heard any input from the customers good or bad and my sales certainly haven't increased substantialy. I think this might help the younger techs upsell in a q-lube atmosphere. I'm still not completely sold on the idea for our shop. This is not a new idea by any means. I was doing these as a tech in 70s and 80s and it was another one of those ideas that went by the wayside.

I hear ya. You really have to stay on top of it or it does indeed fall by the wayside.

Techs and advisors will sometimes get discouraged if the don't hit paydirt with each and every inspection. ...and then try to tell you "its not worth the trouble."

Well, if you do 50 inspections and get "only" 10 upsells....but each one is 3.0 hours, that's 30 hours that you wouldn't have had were it not for the extra effort!

Do the math for 'em and they'll get the picture...eventually :-)

Again.I do service drive walkarounds but don't sell anything until the prime item is diagnosed.I pay my Techs $3.00 for every flat rate hour they upsell and keep track on a board in the shop with their daily and weekly hours.

We pay our technicians 2 tenths to take the blinders off and look for "needed" work. It tends to pay off adding .5 to 1.0 to every ro.

I have my Quick Service Team do all inspections they are required to completely inspect the vehicle before it goes into the main shop. They also get to keep a lot of the work. The main technicians love it they don't have to stop to do inspections or pull wheels. We pull every wheel for an inspection therefore we rotate tires every visit. We have our own tires for life program so it's good for us to rotate tires and we have made it part of our process. I pay these Quick Service Tech. $3.50 per inspection and spiffs on upsells.
They do a great job..........
