Technician Vacation Pay

Postby MBailey » Wed Aug 23, 2000 2:59 pm

I would be interested to know how other organizations pay their technicians for vacation days. Do You:

1) Pay a set hourly amount (such as 8 hours) per vacation day?

OR

2) Pay a daily amount calculated from the tech's average daily FRH production for perhaps the previous 90 days?

OR

3) Any other methods.

I appreciate your input.

We use the average daily earnings from the previous 6 months to a year. We use the timeframe available for any tech under a year of employment otherwise it is the previous year.

We use the average hourly rate for the techs and all others on commission. If a salary is paid, then that is not figured in to it. We calculate it from at least the last 12-month period.

We take the gross from the previous year and divide it into what they averaged weekly. That is what they get for their vacation pay.
At a dealer I was at for 10 years previous, EVERYONE (except managers) received a % of the previous year gross. The % depended on how long you were employed. 1 to 4 years 2%, 5 to 9 years 4%, 10 and up 5%. Everyone got their check on the same day.

We calculate technicians weekly average pay for the previous year on January 1st, Technicians get paid what ever vacation is owed for the year on the 3rd pay period for
January. This is the 1st year we paid full amount in January rather than pay as they take it. The reasoning is that you have to pay it anyway so pay it and it helps cut down on the amount of days off because alot of people don't save the money and can't afford to take the days off so they work.
So far it has been good this summer for not losing as many people off during the busy season. We also offered a 20% bonus on vacation weeks taken during selected off peak busy times for the service department.

We presently pay all our techs a $400 per week guarantee. We divide this amount by 5 and pay the tech $80 per day for each day of vacation he/she takes. I obtained some good ideas from other comments on this subject and may reevaluate and change our present method.

On January 1 each year we average the prior years production times their normal 8 hour day and use their current pay rate to determine an average daily rate. Any paid time off (holidays, vacations, training) uses this number to determine pay. This way the tech doesn't lose anything as a result of time taken and there are no arguments about going to the schools that I hear about from others. We also pay out their vacation pay as an anniversary bonus on the first check after their anniversary date unless they request us to hold it until they take the time.

We take the prior year's pay divided by 52 for weekly amount to pay for vacation pay. Daily, if allowed, is one fifth of the weekly amount.

Average the last years hourly flat rate per week, then per day. I also offer a 25% bonus for any untaken vacation and sick days.
example if flat rate averaged 8hrs tech would get 10hrs for untaken day. This won't discurage employees from taken needed vacation but a lot of technicians seem to only take days a couple at a time, this works great!!!
