Have you set a minimum paycheck for your technicians if they don't turn the hours?
See other comments on similiar topic under parts manager forum.

We are obligated to pay the CA minimum wage for technicians which is 1.5 time the base amount.
So the techs will the higher of flag amount or $13.50 per clock hour ($9 base minimum wage)
If we begin to pay more off the clock, we'll have to adjust the work schedule.

We don't adjust pay plans when they make too much money do we? Most employees are intelligent enough to know that they aren't the only ones suffering. there are not a multitude of open positions out there so they will need to tough it out like the rest of us. For those of you in the business for awhile you've seen this trends before.

We set up a system where about half of their pay is flat rate (at about half of normal flat rate pay) and the remaining amount is hourly/salary. The idea was to try to get the best of both worlds for everyone involved. It is working better for the shop and the staff than anything else we have done in 30 years.

How can I take away a 40 hour guarantee from my only Transmission tech.? He always seems to turn 20 hours one week and 60 the next week earning 100 hours for two weeks and getting an extra $1 for over fifty and an extra $2 for over 60 hours.

That seems to be the latest scam.
Turn nothing this week for the guarantee and hit the time card hard next week for the tiered qualifiers.

How? Just do it Klink. Some states require a 30day notice of a change in pay plan that is a decrease, but other than that you are the one in control of what pay plan is offered. Either take away the guarantee completely or change the bonus to monthly or quarterly with a requirement of no weeks less than 40 hrs.
This is why I'm not a fan of guarantees. There will always be somebody who takes advantage of it.

alter the "earn in period" to something longer than his personal expenses can handle the manipulation of the pay plan.
