ESI thru the internet (GM)

Postby Michael White » Tue Apr 20, 1999 11:41 pm

Our DSM requested us to get online with ESI through the internet. I think it is still in a pilot stage. I understand the Melissa virus did a real number to them or they became so scared about it. So things are in a delay. Does anyone have ESI through the internet? IF so, how does it work.

This is the first I am hearing of ESI through the internet. Is the web site through GM intranet or is it through the regular internet? What is the web site address?

It is in the pilot stages per Herschel Anderson, Techline Support Atlanta Region. From he was telling us a recent Service and Parts Managers Club meeting this will be the updates for Access will be received instantly along with conveying information back Technical Assistance.
If you look at some of the new recommendations GM is making with replacing T-6, T-50, and T-8's you will notice they should have digital imaging capabilities. This will go in hand also with the new "Web-Based Training" as well.
I don't know that we are going to ready for what appears to be some big changes with communications with GM and maybe we should wait until they can better prove themselves.

We'll have 2 new 450Mh. machines with all the ticks and licks available. Hopefully within a month we will be on the net with ESI. One of the reasons for the internet access is GM access is running out of power. Keep in mind GM owns the computers and very soon may not be able to do what they want us to do. Case in point, we have 28 techs. GM recommends 1 terminal to 2-3 techs. We will not be able to be all logged on because the GM access computer cannot hanle more than 10 logons at once. We have 6 now and will be in trouble with them very soon.Newest update took 10 CD's.just for service.

AT LEAST YOU HAVE SOME ESI FUNCTIONALITY. OUR UPDATE DISKS WERE CORRUPTED, OUR SYSTEM HAS INSTALLATION ERRORS THAT ARE STILL NOT FIXED, AND THE ACCESS FOLKS KEEP TELLING US TO BE PATIENT!! THAT ISN'T EASY TO DO IF YOU HAVE NO INTERFACE WITH THE TECH 2 FOR PROGRAMMING BECUASE YOUR ESI IS INOP!! ANYONE ELSE HAVING "TECH SUPPORT" PROBLEMS WITH THE ACCESS FOLKS?

MARY, WE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS FROM TIME TO TIME TOO, AND PRESENTLY WE CANNOT GET THE "BIG" 7-DISC TO PROPERLY STORE ON OUR SYSTEM. SEVERAL OTHER DEALERSHIPS AROUND US HAVE BEEN DOWN FOR DAYS, LIKE YOU.
BESIDES ACCESS TELLING PEOPLE TO BE PATIENT, TRY CALLING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO ASK FOR HELP, THEN SOME SMART MOUTH SAYS, "DON'T YOU HAVE E.S.I.? CHECK THAT FIRST AND DON'T CALL BACK UNTIL YOU HAVE!",THEN HANGS-UP ON YOU.

IT IS JUST AS MUCH FUN TRYING TO DEAL WITH THE DBC. IT WAS FUN TO GET THE JERK IN TROUBLE WITH HIS SUPERVISOR THOUGH. THOSE TAPES OF THE CALLS ROASTED ONE OF THEM. I AM FIRMLY CONVINCED THAT UNTIL THE DEALER COUNCIL STARTS RAISING SEVEN KINDS OF ^%$*^ AND MEANS IT, THE DEALER WILL BECOME MORE AND MORE OF A SCAPEGOAT. GM HAS FORGOTTEN THAT THE DEALERS ARE GM'S CUSTOMERS ALSO.

Mary, Maybe we have been lucky, but we have had no issues with the loads of ESi. One thing we do is wait 2 to 3 days after we recieve update CDs the I check several of web sites of techs who talk. They will tell all. I was real glad I follow this pattern when the essential tool CD came out. Immediately everyone else had problems.
We have updgraded our T6 and T65 to 450Mgh machines. There is a unbelieveable difference in ESI checking. Techs really like it. Hope your ESI challenges work out

A little off subject, but I was talking to GM access today and Chris said that GM is looking for bids on new servers. Even with new servers I don't see how GM could run the ESI over the internet (as a web page), heck look at the VOMS fiasco. We loaded all of our ESI disks on another server, works just fine. All we need is the techs lined up waiting for web pages to load.
