Prom Updates

About a year ago we recieved a DCS message (I believe it was DCS) that stated any time a vehicle was in the dealership, that we should check to see if it was in need of a prom update. Our DM (new DSM) doesn't know anything about this, and states that other dealers don't check. Has anybody seen this message besides me, if you have, can you help me get a copy of it, or if you haven't seen it, does your shop check incoming service cars for prom updates.

Bob..
I will have to check at work on monday but I know if you look at the Stratigic Diagnosis Flow chart the first step is to check for TSB's and if you check for new TSB's most all GM vehicles have Updated Calibration TSB's and that direct you to update with the latest Calibration.. I will research more on monday but we have had the same battle at our dealership because the Driveablity techs following the flow chart and checking TSB's find most every vehicle has an updated calibration but our DSM & SVC manager says it's loading the claim and won't allow it. Catch 22...

You are looking for big trouble. Almost every system has a update available. It is one thing to update when there is some kind of driveablitity complaint. but to do it automatically is giving the key to big brother to wack you real bad.It is not worth it. As a service manager, I would say this is truly warranty waste and you should not go there.

Guys, you need to check bulletin 87-65-09 which states to check the prom calibrations and if needed, update them. I also remember seeing another similar bulletin on another vehicle platform. I asked my rep about it (this was before the new gm took over) because the bulletin makes it seem like we are supposed to solicit warranty repairs on those vehicles that need the updates. He stated that only those vehicles that are specifically listed in those bulletins are to be updated. My new rep says not to solicit ANY warranty repairs! So, we don't do the updates unless they are related to the customer's complaint.

WE ONLY DO THE UPDATE IF IT IS RELATED TO THE SPECIFIC PROBLEM THE CUSTOMER BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN FOR. IN MANY OF THE DRIVEABILITY REPAIRS, THIS IS THE FIRST DIAG. CHECK. IF THE UPDATE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CURRENT COMPLAINT,WE DON'T DO IT. IF IT DOES, IT IS THE FIRST LOGICAL STEP. WITH A LITTLE CLAIM REVIEW, ANY TECH WHO TRIES TO PUSH THE ENVELOPE CAN BE SPOTTED AND CORRECTED. THE WORST ISSUE IS THAT THIS SITUATION, LIKE MANY OTHERS IE:BRAKE ROTORS) IS OPEN TO INTERPRETATION BY THE INDIVIDUAL DSM. THAT IS THE PROBLEM, SINCE THEY ARE NOT ALL ON THE SAME PAGE OF THE SAME BOOK. SOME OF THEM STILL DON'T HAVE A COPY OF "THE BOOK"

i AGREE IF YOU SHOULD NOT RUN CHECK'S ON EVERY VEHICLE ONLY IF ONE COMES IN WITH DRIVEABILITY COMPLAINT. I HAVE CORRECTED MANY COMPLAINT'S OF THE CUSTOMER'S BY GOING AHEAD WITH THE UPDATE EVEN IF IT DOESN'T QUITE FIT THE UPDATE MODIFICATION EXPLANATION. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY TECH ASSIST IF YOU HAVE A REAL COMPLAINT AND CAN DUPLICATE IT EVEN IF THE MODIFICATION IS NOT SPECIFIC TO THE CUSTOMER'S COMPLAINT GO AHEAD AND DO THE UPDATE THAT IT IS THE LATEST AND GREATEST AND HAVE RECENTLY HEARD FROM ONE CUSTOMER THAT SAID IT DID TAKE CARE OF HIS ROUGH IDLE PROBLEM, EVEN THOUGH THE BUL UPDATE FOR SLOW CRANK TYPE PROBLEM ON S-10, BUT IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT SLOW CRANK COULD DUMP FUEL NOT BURNT AND WOULD POSSIBLY CAUSE ROUGH IDLE AT TIMES EVEN THOUGH WE WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE CUSTOMER'S CONCERN ON SERVERAL ATTEMPS WE UPDATED AND RECEIVED WORD TODAY THAT IT FIXED HIS PROBLEM. ONE PROBLEM I HAVE WITH THE NEW FORMAT AS FAR AS DSM FEELINGS TOWARDS CERTAIN THINGS SUCH AS MENTIONED LIKE BRAKE ROTORS HIS OPPINION DOES NOT GO VERY FAR WHEN THE AUDITOR'S ARE AT YOUR PLACE, EVEN THOUGH I KNOW MOST OF THE TIME MOST AUDIT'S ARE FROM YOUR LOCAL POST. I STILL DON'T FEEL VERY PROTECTED FROM AUDIT'S EVEN WITH DSM BLESSINGS
