Tech Pay for Web Based Training

We pay a tech's daily average wage when they are away on training, furnish a vehicle, fuel, lodging and meals. The question arises regarding Web Based Training which does not require the tech to miss any time from work, and can be done any hour of the day from any internet capable PC. We have not been paying techs for this training as we feel an investment in their career. Our techs have been complaining and feel we should pay them for this training also. What are other dealers doing?

Our tech pay system is about half hourly and half flat rate. So, when they are doing on line classes at work they are getting their hourly pay only.

Better techs (or any other type of employee for that matter) will do on line training on their own time at home to become better at what they do...and would not even think to ask to be paid for it.

So the tech's asking for pay are the same ones that would complain about not being paid for attending a clinic. I am a parts manager but I do put on a few GM powertrain clinics a year and I always hear our techs complain that having good (free) training and food is not enough.

The training thing goes both ways. The tech benefits but so does the dealership. To each his own as to how you perceive it and how you want to handlie it. However, and this might be state specific, you may be required by law to pay for training if you REQUIRE the training.

As far as techs(or any ee complaining), haven't you learned to tune it out yet?

We pay our techs $40.00 for web-based training if it is completed within 30 days. If not completed within 30 days, they are not paid for the web-based training.

Web courses are done for free and I pay for
Live training. If they don't do the web training I won't send them to the Live courses. Raises are based on training levels as well.
