Paying techs for test drives

We have constant debates at our shop about paying techs for long test drives. The rep told us that the advisors are supposed to do that, but they'd never be at their desk to write-up customers if they are out test driving every vehicle. Help.

Sometimes we get permission from the owner for an advisor, manager or tech to use it overnight if it needs a long drive. VW will pay for a six minute drive! Or perhaps a salesperson, or even myself during the day.

Warranty usually includes the time in the repair. It is concidered to be part of the diagnosis. Some Warranties have a test drive operation code that can be used. Customer pay can be .3 hr. of higher depending on the complaint from the customer.

We'd rather keep the techs in the shop working than out driving up and down the freeway so quite often the shop foreman or myself will drive the cars if a long test is needed.

Or, when that's not feasible, we'll pay the tech for his time and, if we think we can't recover it, just put it on the shop ticket.

Cheers
