Hey Matt,

Don't you think that it will possible for dealerships to be able to do business over the internet and not tie up money in a system, sometime in the near future? It sure seems like this might be a "better mouse trap".

There are companies that are offering 768K speed links to the internet now that only needs a single dedicated phone line. I hope that this isn't just fantasy but, dealership could probably save alot of money and not be tied to down for long term contracts to the Reynolds and Reynolds and the ADP's of the world. Wow!!

Sam

Yes, Yes, Yes!
The reality of business is that mundane operations such as many tasks currently housed within a DMS on a local CPU can be moved to web-delivery. The real value of this is in the elimination of much of the "infrastructure" within the dealers four walls (such as CPU's/servers), by moving them to a centrally managed facility. In many ways, dealers with remote stores do some of this today - connecting 2nd, 3rd, XXth, stores via communication lines to a server located in their "main" facility. The ideal scenario arises when dealers can off-load activities such as back-ups, system maintenance, etc, can leverage multiple businesses off of one server, and can lease access to applications or seats and can turn them on and off as needed, and can include a technology refresh into the seat price.

The reality of the matter is that we along with several other business partners are about to announce this type of solution for an entire network of dealers associated with a single OEM here in the U.S. Please stay tuned as we anticipate piloting this scenario this summer (2000).

Another thing to consider are some of the advances made with Win98 2nd Edition, and WIn 2000. Both have a little used feature called "Share my Internet Connection" which lets PC's share a single modem (telephone) connection. When we upgraded our EDS system recently, we used this to connect 2 or 3 PCs together, and thus didn't have to invest in 7 or 8 phone lines, modems, ect. We have 3 outside buildings which all now use 3 incoming data lines (56k modem) instead of the 7 lines it would have taken if this feature hadn't been availible. Works great btw, the initial setup is a slight pain, but once setup up, we have had zero problems with it!

Thanks for your question. EDS Parts Imager has been working directly with
ADP over the past few months to more effectively deliver seamless
integration between your ADP In-house system and EDS Parts Imager2. EDS
Parts Imager, working directly with ADP, has developed integration with
ADP's newest in-house system, Alliance. EDS Parts Imager will be releasing
integration for ADP Alliance with your June 2000 updates. This integration package requires no software at all. We hope to have
the Unix integration for the 8800 and 9200 boxes developed with ADP's
reflections emulation software in the near future. This would no longer
require to use Rumba. We will keep you up to date via our monthly EDS Parts
Imager News Letter.
